There's something comforting about reading a Regency Romance after a long hard day. These stories with genteel characters seeking love are calming and pleasant. Despite whatever drama lies within the pages, the well-mannered characters muddle through to their happily ever after.

Duchess In Love is a perfect example of this genre, and I particularly love the novels by Eloisa James. Duchess In Love has her trademark witty characters who find themselves in sometimes-absurd situations. The secondary characters add just the right amount of humor to make the reader smile—knowing full well that these second bananas will have their day in the spotlight as the heroine of another of the books in her series.

In Duchess In Love, the heroine was forced into marriage with a Duke at a very young age. He left the country immediately without consummating the marriage. Years pass and Gina, our virgin heroine who is sorely put out by her lot in life, wants an annulment so she can get on with her life.

When Camden, her Duke, returns home, with that very intention on his mind, he finds Gina has become a woman—a very desirable woman. How can he give her the annulment she demands when he realizes he's fallen in love with her?

This novel was delightful, and I can't wait to read the second book in her Duchess series.

Duchess in Love Eloisa James 9780060508104 Books Reviews

Eloisa James writes her books with an infusion of humor. Her books are witty and fun, this one is no different. While, part of a "series" each one of the four "Duchess" novels can stand alone and do not have to be read in order, which was my experience. I actually read them out of order, but it did not diminish any enjoyment of any of the books in this series. The Duchesses themselves are not at all what you would expect out of "blue bloods" they are real and warm and care deeply about each other and when they love, they love deeply...Eloisa James' books are not to be missed and will very much be enjoyed.
Wow! This book was amazing! A mature regency with love, sex, scandal, and heartbreak. Such an amazing work of emotion, passion, and drama. There were moments where I felt I would shatter and moments where I wasn't sure if the Hero would actually get the girl. I love Cam, so much, he's absolutely wonderful. A perfect hero. Not a perfect man, but certainly a perfect hero. I loved Gina. The best kind of heroine. And so perfect for Cam. I can't like the Marquess. I loved Tuppy and the solicitor. I pity Neville and wish him a woman even half as wonderful as Carola. But I ache for Elsie and Helena. I hope they get their own book. Very very highly recommended for everyone.
Horrible book! I ALWAYS finish books, but this one was the exception. I quit at about 200 pages. The main characters are not likable in the least and definitely have morality issues. This felt like a regency period swingers house party to me. Definitely not worth the time and money!
I enjoy reading Eloisa James novels, they are a wonderful escape from the daily grind, and a lot cheaper then a road trip. I like to think of them as short escapades rather then novels. Eloisa manages to create a story using a potent mix of romance, adventure, heroics, then doses it with a good sense of humor. Her descriptions help you visualize in detail the characters of the innocent Gina & her long time separated supposed self absorbed rake of a husband Cam. You become absorbed in their separate lives, the ridiculous assumptions they both make of one another, their lifelong friendship they shared being raised as "cousins" together, the prudish fiancé awaiting their annulment. You then applaud the moment when Gina & Cam realize they should remain married, in truth this time. Thanks for the entertaining escapade!
I have read several books written by this author, and I must say that I am hooked by this authors way of telling a story. I feel that Ms. James draws her readers in with REAL emotions, if maybe a typo or two. Yet I feel that is what makes this author so "REAL", maybe not perfect. This story of Cam and Gina was, for this reader, such a "real emotion" story. A man that is forced to marry someone he thought of as family, only moments before. Then leaving because he has had enough of his fathers' abuse. Unfortunately, when he hears of his fathers death, he still chooses not to come home, because home to him, was not a happy place. Yet when he is asked to annual his marriage to Gina, he comes back to English to do just that, because for him it was fair request. What he realises is that he was in error to stay gone for so long. He left his "wife" to deal with all aspects of managing his estate. As he spends more time with Gina, Ms. James lets her readers realise that Cam and Gina as destined to be together.

The other thing that this author does wonderfully, is create storylines within other storylines, and you find yourself wanting to know what is next for the supporting characters of her books. I have yet to find another author that does this so magically, even Ms. Roberts can not do this as effortlessly as Ms. James does. To this reader, that is the sign of great writer.

Please note that there my be some typos in this review.
If it has Eloisa James as the author I buy it. This is an early one of what became her "Desperate duchesses" series. I call it Hilarious History. Her writing is witty, fun and at the same time insightful. This duchess was married at age 11, and her 18-year-old spouse immediately jumped out the window and fled to the continent, where he was lived for 12 years. He returns because she writes that she wants an annulment so she can marry someone else. So we have the Regency house party, with three sets of husbands and wives who do not live together, plus attendant hopeful mates or lovers. Rather a Shakespearean feel to this romp.
I like the main couple, but the author spends so much time diverting to other couples and characters I had a hard time maintaining momentum with the main story. I found myself skipping multiple chapters to get to where the main couple picked up again. Truthfully, in the end, I gave up.
