This book is so much fun. I absolutely loved everything about it – the humor, the mystery, the clever writing and great characters. And Lawrence is such a great character – so genuine and well-drawn. Yes, his personality is built upon a strong foundation of self-delusion, but he’s still a guy you’ll root for, because at his core, he’s a nice guy with good intentions. The story opens when Lawrence, fresh off the last in a long string of “screw-ups,” is forced to enter the “Buddy Club” and mentor a new freshman student. He’s convinced it’ll be an easy job. After all, he’s a junior, he knows the social dynamics of the school, and he can teach the new kid how to fit in. Even though his track record isn’t the best, Lawrence has a healthy self-confidence, which is hilarious.
Pretty soon it’s Lawrence who needs a buddy, as a saboteur strikes during Homecoming Week, and everyone blames him. Is someone out to get him? Or are they using his reputation as a screw-up as convenient cover for their own nefarious plans? The mystery in this book was well-crafted, and I was really pulling for Lawrence to find the true culprit.
This book has mystery, humor, and a homecoming float scene that I’ll never forget.

The Boomerang Effect eBook Gordon Jack Reviews
This book starts off very much feeling like a poor Andrew Smith "Winger"or "Stand-Off" wannabe. World weary but vaguely immature stoner with absent parents and girlfriend/friend/school issues makes smart-aleck observations about school and life while drifting around being judgmental and sour. Don't despair, though, because our hero has to be down and backwards in order ultimately to head up and forward. (Anyway, he's a funny enough immature stoner that you suspect right off that things are going to get better, and they do pretty quickly.)
After another epic screwup our hero, Lawrence, has been given one last chance at pre-reform school redemption as a buddy/mentor for a new young Norwegian exchange student. This kid, Spencer, turns out to be a deadpan Yoda in a bow tie, and the buddy comedy commences, (although the story is still pretty much Lawrence's).
Here's the best part. While Lawrence is good company who remains appealing even as the tale goes more and more off the tracks, every other supporting character is interesting and funny. Lawrence doesn't hog the best lines. Who remembers when manic oblivious Mom, distant Dad, exasperated Principal, best friend, girl of one's dreams, ex girlfriend from Hell, football bully, and Ms. Perfect cheerleader all and each had personality, style and bunches of funny lines of their own? That's what you get here, with antic characters to spare. (And a surprising helping of, get this, kindness.)
The book is set up well. We have the book length arc of Lawrence and Spencer. We have an action/adventure/mystery involving who is vandalizing the homecoming floats. But we also have literally dozens of short to mid-length scenes and bits of business that keep everything light and lively. (A vampires versus Renaissance LARPers rumble?) These throwaway segments can be touching or manic or just odd, but they punch up the book quite nicely.
So, no angst or kitchen sink drama, (although maybe a bit of edge here or there), this is more of a teen school daze rom-com, which was just fine by me. A happy and funny nice find.
(Please note that I received a free advance ecopy of this book without a review requirement, or any influence regarding review content should I choose to post a review. Apart from that I have no connection at all to either the author or the publisher of this book.)
Delightfully nuanced characters who speak with heart and humor. Love!
Refreshing, entertaining story about high school politics, mishaps, and the struggle to fit in. Great insight and wit.
A very enjoyable read. I was actually as interested to get to the heart of the mystery as much as I enjoyed the humor. It is a nice change from all the dark and foreboding fiction that is out there right now.
I'm a mom of an almost teenage boy and am trying to arm myself with as much knowledge as possible. Gordon's book is delightful, funny, thought provoking and one I will keep on the virtual shelf for my son to read when he is ready, which will be soon, I'm sure. I hope my son comes to know himself as Lawerence does, but without the threat of expulsion )
I can’t wait to have my teens--both in my family and in my classroom--read this book. I love how The Boomerang Effect captures everything from creative twists on homecoming traditions to literary references to talking squirrels and LARPers. While Gordon Jack’s novel overflows with humor and wit, it also has depth. The protagonist, Lawrence, has to cope with the onslaught of countless teen pressures, from the expectations of “friends” to the judgments and misunderstandings that fray relationships to the absence of parents caught up in their own lives. He’s quite a character--who would expect someone going through pot withdrawal to be a secret origami-master who enjoys watching telenovelas with the family cook? He’s a likable antihero who has to solve a mystery to clear his name and finds some measure of redemption as he struggles between doing what he knows is right and what he perceives as socially acceptable.
Jack especially has a gift for creating authentic voice and interesting characters--even the minor characters have unexpected traits that make them fresh. As a high school teacher, it was engaging to encounter characters that reflect what we see on campus, from those who do everything to build the perfect college resume to those who revel in their nonconformity. Additionally, as the mother of a son on the spectrum, I was especially grateful to see the character of Spencer developed in a way that both raises awareness and celebrates someone who doesn’t sync with social expectations.
I love that this was immensely fun to read with plenty of LOL moments, yet it also fostered empathy and insight. I’m excited to pass this book along to others and to read what Jack writes next.
